Blue Jays Sign All-Star Pitcher Amid Late-Season Injury Crisis

The Toronto Blue Jays have secured All-Star starting pitcher Michael Lorenzen for the remainder of the 2026 season as they grapple with a late-season injury crisis. The Blue Jays, who recently clinched their first World Series appearance since 1993, have faced numerous injuries throughout the year. New signing Cody Ponce suffered a torn ACL in his first start and Jose Berrios is out for the season due to Tommy John surgery.

Patrick Corbin is also sidelined with a shoulder injury, and rookie Trey Yesavage and pitchers Jameson Taillon and Shane Bieber are currently on the injured list.

Lorenzen, who began the year with the Colorado Rockies and posted a 7.08 ERA through 115.2 innings, will bolster the Blue Jays' pitching staff while their key starters recover. His performance was particularly inconsistent at home, with a 9.12 ERA at Coors Field. Despite this, Lorenzen will take over the Blue Jays' rotation, which currently has only four healthy starting pitchers.

Dylan Cease, Jose Soriano, and Spencer Arrighetti round out the rotation, with Max Scherzer also on the roster. While Scherzer, Soriano, and Arrighetti have yet to meet expectations, the Blue Jays aim to stage a strong comeback in the American League East standings. Currently, they trail behind the Cleveland Guardians by three games in the Wild Card race, but a solid finish to the season could secure their postseason berth.
