Beloved New Orleans hospital, wracked by floods and grief in Hurricane Katrina, to get a makeover

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Charity Hospital in New Orleans transformed into both a scene of tragedy and bravery as doctors fought to keep patients alive in the absence of power and medical equipment, trapped within the hospital's dark halls for several days by floodwaters. The hospital, once a New Orleans landmark providing care to the city's most vulnerable residents, was abandoned following the evacuation of all patients and staff in 2005.

As the storm's 21st anniversary arrives on Saturday, New Orleans is on the cusp of a significant change as Tulane University plans to convert the damaged building into a medical research hub, marking the start of $500 million worth of construction expected to begin this fall. The landmark 1930s-era art deco structure will be transformed into a central location for biomedical innovation in the downtown area.

Local leaders have welcomed the project in a city where numerous hospitals have served as reminders of the devastation caused by Katrina. Earlier this month, demolition crews commenced the dismantling of another abandoned complex, the Lindy Boggs Medical Center, which had been vacant for over 20 years since the hurricane.

The hurricane, one of the deadliest and most destructive in U.S. history, claimed nearly 1,400 lives across five states and caused an estimated $200 billion in damages. It flattened homes along the Gulf Coast and inundated neighborhoods with ruinous floods. Tulane University's President Michael Fitts stated that reviving the iconic landmark is a major step in overcoming the hurricane's dark days, emphasizing that the hospital "reflected the sort of commitment of New Orleans to the healthcare of the community" and that its return will "make the same commitment to the community."
