Arab Group backs Syria’s unity and stability at UNSC meeting

At a recent United Nations Security Council meeting, Qatar represented the Arab Group and reaffirmed its unwavering support for Syria's sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity. The group rejected external interference in Syria's affairs, emphasizing that the country's stability is a cornerstone of regional security.

HE Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif al-Thani, the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the UN, highlighted the Syrian government's efforts to extend state authority, promote transitional justice, and address the issue of missing persons.

The Arab Group urged the international community to bolster assistance and investment for Syria, as well as to strengthen economic cooperation to aid in the country's recovery and reconstruction. She also stressed the importance of removing obstacles to Syria's economic integration with the world and commended the cooperation between Syria and the UN, including recent visits by the UN secretary-general and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

The group condemned the bombings in Damascus and the surrounding areas, as well as all acts that threaten Syria's security and stability. They acknowledged the Syrian government's actions against these threats and called for continued support. Qatar welcomed the US' removal of Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, calling it a positive step towards regional stability.

The Arab Group strongly condemned Israeli airstrikes on a military airport in northwestern Syria, stating that the attacks violated Syria's sovereignty, security, stability, and territorial integrity. They stressed the need for the international community to firmly condemn Israel's aggression and take concrete actions in line with international law and the UN Charter to end the violations and secure the withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied territories.

The group reaffirmed that the Golan Heights are occupied Arab land, and that Israel's imposition of its laws, jurisdiction, and administration on the region is null and void, as per UN resolutions. They reiterated their support for Syria and its people in building a stable, prosperous, and just state based on the rule of law and the protection of all Syrians' rights.
