Ahsan Iqbal Announces 400th Attempt to Revive Pakistan Railway

Federal authorities have unveiled a Rs. 450 billion+ upgrade plan for the Rohri-Multan segment of ML-1 railway line, following 399 unsuccessful attempts over ten years. Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal emphasized railway modernization as a top government priority during a financing meeting, where the immense cost and deteriorating infrastructure conditions were highlighted.

The meeting also examined various funding avenues, including development funds, foreign financing, public-private partnerships, local bank financing, and domestic capital markets. Iqbal ordered an independent feasibility study for the project to evaluate its technical, financial, and economic viability, and to identify an appropriate financing model.

The Ministry of Railways was instructed to assess future requirements for locomotives, freight wagons, and passenger coaches, and to incorporate these into an integrated railway modernization plan. The ML-1 railway line is crucial for enhancing passenger and freight transport, as well as trade and economic activity. Iqbal called for alternative financing options, as budget cuts continue to impact major projects.
