‘After we shout ‘Merdeka’, don’t leave rubbish everywhere’: SWCorp warns revellers

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 28 — The Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp) is increasing monitoring and enforcement actions during National Day celebrations. The Ministry of Housing and Local Government announced that enforcement personnel will be stationed at key locations to penalize those caught littering in public areas.

Violators could face a fine of up to RM2,000 or 12 hours of community service within six months. Community service may involve tasks like cleaning up rubbish and maintaining public spaces under the guidance of local authorities. Visitors are reminded to dispose of their waste in designated bins before departing the event venues.

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming emphasized that the National Day spirit should extend beyond patriotism, incorporating discipline and responsibility in maintaining a clean environment. He urged Malaysians to celebrate National Day enthusiastically and proudly, without leaving rubbish scattered everywhere. The minister noted that past incidents, such as Dataran Merdeka being littered after the 2026 World Cup final, highlight the importance of collective responsibility in keeping the country clean.

He reiterated that cleanliness is a shared duty, not solely that of cleaning workers, but of every individual generating waste.
