Affirm and Shopify Take Shop Pay Installments to Australia

Australian consumers can now use Shop Pay Installments from Affirm when shopping on Shopify, according to a Thursday (Aug. 27) press release from the companies. This feature is enabled through a global partnership between Affirm and Shopify that launches Shop Pay Installments exclusively through Affirm. Initially launched in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, the installment payment option is now available for eligible Australian shoppers to split their purchases into biweekly or monthly payments, choose between interest-free or interest-bearing plans, and view their total cost before finalizing their buy.

Shopify's Australian merchants can enable Shop Pay Installments through the Shopify admin dashboard, according to the release. Rohit Mishra, Shopify's vice president of product, payments, and cross-border, stated that the new installment option "unlocks even more flexibility and choice, helping our merchants continue to meet consumers where they are and how they like to shop."

Nitin Kashid, Affirm's Australia country manager, added that the partnership with Shopify built Shop Pay Installments for the future, providing a way to pay with flexible terms and no late fees ever. Shopify and Affirm launched the installment option in the U.S. in June 2021, differentiating it from typical buy now, pay later (BNPL) plans by allowing customers to complete their purchase without navigating away from the merchant's site.

The companies announced in February 2025 that they would expand Shop Pay Installments to Canada and the U.K., with Canada being the first market outside the U.S. to offer this pay-over-time option in April 2025. Affirm's latest quarter report indicates that BNPL is increasingly being used for everyday spending, with gross merchandise volume rising 36% year-over-year to $14.1 billion and transaction volume climbing 41% to 53 million.
