Abelardo de la Espriella begins to dismantle Colombia’s peace process

Colombia's new President Abelardo de la Espriella has ended the nation's peace negotiations with illegal armed groups. In a series of speeches, de la Espriella announced the termination of talks with rebels, the construction of large prisons, and the extradition of five key rebel leaders. These actions represent a significant shift in his campaign promise to tackle crime aggressively, yet experts question the potential consequences.

Speaking in Bogotá, de la Espriella criticized his predecessor, President Gustavo Petro, for granting ceasefires that allegedly enabled criminals to rearm and recruit. He emphasized the need for genuine peace grounded in justice, rather than dialogue that could result in impunity. Colombia's criminal organizations allegedly exploited these ceasefires to expand their operations.

Prior to de la Espriella's inauguration, the military swore in new leaders who would focus on restoring security across conflict zones. The president also ordered the extradition of five senior rebel commanders, including Geovany Andrés Rojas, the leader of the Comandos de la Frontera. Rojas had been involved in peace negotiations before being captured in February 2025.

Two more commanders have been handed over to the U.S., while the remaining two are still at large. However, analysts suggest that these measures alone may not significantly improve Colombia's security situation and could potentially exacerbate violence in the short term.
