Women, girls warned with high-risk sex offender to live in Winnipeg

Winnipeg women and girls have been warned about a high-risk sex offender who is expected to live in the city. Desmond Jared Shane Catcheway, 37, was recently released from Milner Ridge Correctional Centre in Manitoba, according to a joint statement from the Manitoba Integrated High Risk Sex Offender Unit and the Winnipeg Police Service.

Catcheway has a lengthy criminal record, including multiple convictions for sexual assault and other violent offenses. He has a history of sexually assaulting unconscious females and has used illegal drugs to facilitate these acts. His first conviction was in 2010, when he was found guilty of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl who was asleep.

Since then, Catcheway has been convicted several times for similar offenses. In addition to sexual assault, he has been found guilty of luring a minor under 16 years old, indecent exposure, robbery, and transmitting sexually explicit material to a minor. While in custody for these convictions, he refused to participate in required sexual offender programming.

Police describe Catcheway as being 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 240 pounds. He has black hair, brown eyes, and several tattoos. He is currently subject to several court-imposed conditions, including living at an approved address, reporting to Probation Services, and adhering to a curfew. He is also banned from owning or possessing a cellphone and is prohibited from attending places where people under 16 congregate, such as parks and schools.

Police have stated that any vigilante activity targeting Catcheway will not be tolerated.
