Why I resigned as NFF President – Ibrahim Gusau

Ibrahim Gusau, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), announced his resignation on Wednesday. In a press conference held in Abuja, Gusau shared his reasons for stepping down from his role. He expressed his love for Nigeria and his commitment to furthering the development of football in the country as the driving forces behind his decision.

Gusau took up the position of NFF President on September 30, 2022, during the 78th Elective Congress in Benin City, Edo State. However, on the same day, he resigned along with other board members following widespread calls for an investigation into the NFF's management of football in Nigeria. The demand for a probe was prompted by the Super Falcons' inability to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Despite the controversy surrounding his tenure, Gusau emphasized his deep love for his country and its progress as the primary motivation for his resignation. He urged his fellow football professionals to reflect on their role and consider what steps should be taken next. During his tenure, Gusau had consulted with family, friends, and stakeholders, and decided to resign his position.

He advised his Board members that anyone who succeeded him should also resign if they wished to continue the conversation about the future of Nigerian football. Gusau assured that his vision for the sport remains intact, and he hopes that his experience and relationships within African football will still enable them to contribute to the progress of Nigerian football.
