West Java governor’s political future in spotlight amid party-switch rumors

West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi has become the focus of speculation regarding his political future after rumors emerged that he might defect from President Prabowo Subianto's Gerindra Party to join the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI). The unverified claims surfaced earlier this week and spread rapidly on social media, suggesting that the popular governor's growing influence could lead him to pursue a presidential or vice-presidential campaign.

Dedi, affectionately known as Kang Dedi, had joined Gerindra in 2023 to contest the governorship in the 2024 regional elections, after switching allegiances from the Golkar Party. The Indonesian Solidity Party, headed by Kaesang Pangarep, son of former President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, has been actively recruiting defectors from other political parties to bolster its standing ahead of the upcoming general election and to ensure representation in the House of Representatives.

Buky Wibawa, deputy chairman of Gerindra's West Java chapter, dismissed the speculation as unfounded, stating that he had confirmed with the governor, who has no plans to leave the party. The deputy emphasized Dedi's integrity and the likelihood of him consulting the Gerindra executive board about such a significant move.
