‘We cannot keep pampering the players’: Lee Chong Wei’s blunt message amid Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik uncertainty

Malaysian badminton legend Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei has cautioned Malaysian players against wielding the threat of leaving the national team as a bargaining chip, stressing that no individual should be more important than the team as a whole. BAM performance committee chairman Lee made the remarks in response to Soh Wooi Yik's assertion that he and his longtime partner Aaron Chia are contemplating their options as they strive to stay together through the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

According to The Star, Lee highlighted that while BAM is open to listening to its players' concerns, they strongly advise against resorting to leaving simply because decisions made by the association do not align with their preferences. "Remember where the player came from and where he trained when he was younger. He came through BAM and BAM helped develop him into the player he is today, so when he achieves something now, you also have to remember who helped him get there," Lee emphasized.

"Don't use the World Championships result to pressure the association. I don't know how things were handled before, but the current management is not afraid to make tough decisions." Lee added that the current management is prepared to discuss any matter but cautioned against players using their exit as a means to exert pressure on BAM.

Chia and Soh have expressed their desire to continue their partnership through the 2028 Olympics, and their argument for staying together was bolstered by their silver medal at the World Championships in New Delhi. However, BAM's coaching team remains committed to experimenting with different player combinations as it prepares for the next Olympic cycle.

Chia has already been paired with Aaron Tai, who secured the runner-up position at the Taiwan Open alongside Chia. Soh, on the other hand, has been paired with Man Wei Chong and advanced to the Korean Masters final with his new partner. These changes are set to continue at the China Masters from September 1, with Chia joining Man Wei Chong and Soh partnering with Tai.

The future of the Chia-Soh partnership is now in question despite their confidence in their ability to remain competitive together until the Los Angeles Olympics. However, leaving BAM would come with significant complications, as both players are contractually bound to the national body until 2028, which could result in a substantial compensation claim if they decide to go independent.

Furthermore, they may face restrictions on participating in international tournaments, making the process of accumulating ranking points necessary for Olympic qualification considerably more challenging.
