Watch:Hijacking caught on CCTV outside Durban primary school
Children watched as armed men hijacked an Audi outside a school in Durban.
On Wednesday morning, a group of schoolchildren in Durban witnessed a hijacking occur outside SRS Primary School in Overport. A man had dropped off his children at the school, and armed hijackers in a silver Renault Triber approached his Audi, threatening the driver with a firearm and forcing him from the vehicle. The hijacked Audi was later found stripped and damaged in KwaMashu, north of Durban.
CCTV footage outside the school captured the hijacking. Men alighted from a parked car and approached the driver's window, reaching in while his accomplice opened the back door to remove two children from the back seat. The family in the car was quickly overwhelmed by the robbers, who surrounded all the doors of the vehicle. A minibus taxi arrived and parked nearby, dropping off more schoolchildren who paid no attention to the unfolding event at the school.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Paul Magwaza stated that a case of carjacking was opened at Mayville SAPS, as the victim had parked his vehicle outside the school on West Road when the suspects accosted him and robbed him of his vehicle and cellphones.
