UP Tops Country In Vehicle Scrapping, Accounts For Nearly 48.5% Of Total Scrapped Vehicles

Lucknow, August 27: Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the leading state in the country for scrapping old, unfit, and polluting vehicles, securing a remarkable 48.5% share of total vehicle scrappings nationwide as of July 31, 2026. Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh attributed this achievement to the state's commitment to creating a clean, safe, and modern transport system under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's leadership.

The Uttar Pradesh government has implemented stringent vehicle scrapping policies, promoting scientific and environmentally friendly methods of waste management, recycling, and a circular economy. With the construction of 92 licensed Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facilities (RVSFs), 51 of which are currently operational, the state offers a regulated and safe alternative to unauthorized scrap dealers for disposing of end-of-life vehicles.

Eligible vehicle owners purchasing new vehicles receive road tax concessions, including up to 15% for non-transport vehicles and 10% for transport vehicles. In the NCR region, owners replacing old trucks or buses with new vehicles can avail themselves of up to 100% road tax exemption for 10 years. The government is also focusing on ensuring quality and transparency in the scrapping process, conducting inspections and monitoring to ensure compliance with prescribed standards.

The Yogi government aims to phase out old and unfit vehicles, reduce pollution, enhance road safety, and provide citizens with access to clean and modern transport facilities by 2047.
