Ulta Beauty lifts annual forecasts as marketing, product investments fuel growth

Ulta Beauty has raised its annual sales and profit forecasts on Thursday, anticipating that marketing and product assortment investments will drive demand as the company continues to open stores in the U.S. Net sales increased by 8.9% to $3 billion, boosted by comparable sales, the acquisition of Space NK, and 13 net U.S. store openings in the second quarter, accounting for nearly half of its first-half total.

Despite inflationary pressures, higher-income consumers and young shoppers continue to spend on trendy and higher-margin fragrance and makeup brands. The company, undergoing a turnaround under CEO Kecia Steelman, has capitalized on this demand through exclusive brand partnerships, such as rapper Megan Thee Stallion's Hot Girl Summer fragrance, and a focus on TikTok Shop, which has boosted Gen-Z sales.

Ulta revealed that approximately half of its sales are now attributed to exclusive brands and products. Research firm Placer.ai suggests that consumer confidence, even if shaky, may be beneficial, as it reinforces the 'lipstick effect' – the tendency for consumers to continue spending on smaller, affordable luxuries like beauty products.

The company now anticipates full-year sales growth between 6.7% and 7.2%, an increase from its previous forecast of 6% to 7%. Ulta expects annual earnings per share to range between $28.70 and $29, up from its prior forecast of $28.36 to $28.80 per share. The company's quarterly sales of $3.04 billion surpassed analysts' average estimate of $2.96 billion, while its quarterly earnings per share of $6.55 exceeded estimates of $6.19.

Analysts, including eMarketer's Rachel Wolff, attribute Ulta's strong performance to its positioning as shoppers' preferred beauty retailer, despite competition from Amazon and TikTok.
