Trump officials threaten Kennedy Center demolition if court blocks renovations

The Trump administration has threatened to demolish the Kennedy Center if renovations for the performing arts venue are blocked by a court order. The Justice Department has asked for President Donald Trump's name to be reinstated on the building, which was removed in June following a court ruling. The attorneys argue that prohibiting the Board from recognizing President Trump will cause donors to leave, financial contributions to diminish, and rehabilitation to cease.

The renovation of the Kennedy Center has been a priority for Trump since his return to the White House in 2025. His lawyers claim that without the renovations, the venue will deteriorate into an unsafe, decrepit structure that will need to be torn down. They also described the venue as "embarrassing to the Nation's Capital". Once the "decrepit structure" is removed, a decision will be made on what to build on the site, potentially including a large outdoor amphitheatre overlooking the Potomac River.

This threat comes shortly after the Kennedy Center board voted to add Trump's name back to the building and to move forward with a two-year closure for proposed renovations. Most of the board members who voted are Trump allies appointed by the president. In May, a US judge ruled that President Trump's name was added unlawfully and ordered it to be removed.

The case is part of a broader legal dispute over the renaming of the Kennedy Center, which is designated as a memorial to President John F Kennedy. Trump has been undertaking several projects since returning to Washington, including renovating the reflecting pool on the National Mall, constructing a 250-foot victory arch, demolishing the White House East Wing to build a ballroom, and adding his name to various institutions like the Kennedy Center and US Institute of Peace.
