Tropical Storm Dolly forms in the Atlantic Ocean far from land

Tropical Storm Dolly emerged Thursday in the vast Atlantic Ocean, a considerable distance from any landmass. Meteorologists from the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami anticipate the storm to dissipate rapidly due to unfavorable environmental conditions expected to kick in from Friday. Despite its name, Dolly has no association with the recent passing of country singer Dolly Parton.

Naming conventions for storms are governed by the World Meteorological Organization, which maintains a list of alphabetical, alternating male and female names for each hurricane season. In the Atlantic, the season kicked off with Tropical Storm Arthur in June, followed by Tropical Storm Bertha in July. Tropical Storm Cristobal came and went earlier this August.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts a below-average Atlantic hurricane season, owing to the influence of El Nino. This outlook forecasts eight to 14 named storms, with three to six of them potentially reaching hurricane strength, and one to three of those growing even more severe as major hurricanes. The primary purpose of naming storms is to facilitate clear communication about these weather events to the public and to prevent any confusion.

The World Meteorological Organization curates these names, ensuring they are succinct, easily pronounceable, and familiar to the regions where they will be used. Occasionally, names are retired in recognition of their association with devastating or destructive hurricanes. For instance, the name 'Melissa' from the 2025 season was retired following its destructive path as a Category 5 hurricane in the Caribbean.
