Thomas Castellanos Transfers to Texas Tech, Adds Experience to Red Raiders’ Quarterback Room

Texas Tech has bolstered its quarterback lineup with the announcement that former Florida State quarterback Thomas Castellanos will join the Red Raiders for the 2026 season. Castellanos, a Miami, Florida native, secured a fifth year of eligibility after a temporary injunction from a Kentucky judge. Before transferring to Texas Tech, Castellanos played at UCF and Boston College, before spending a season with Florida State.

During his time with the Seminoles, Castellanos completed 58.3 percent of his passes for 2,760 yards, 15 touchdowns, and nine interceptions, along with 557 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns. At Texas Tech, Castellanos adds valuable experience and depth to an already strong roster. The Red Raiders had initially planned on Brendan Sorsby as their starting quarterback, but that plan changed following Sorsby's departure.

Will Hammond, who is recovering from a torn ACL, is the team's projected starter for the season opener against Abilene Christian on September 5th. Castellanos provides the Red Raiders with a trusted insurance option should Hammond become injured or unavailable during the season. As Texas Tech aims to compete for a Big 12 championship, Castellanos' experience could prove crucial in helping the team achieve its goals.
