The number of Americans applying for jobless aid slips to 203,000 as layoffs remain low

Last week, the number of Americans applying for U.S. unemployment benefits dropped to 203,000, remaining at historic lows, according to the Labor Department's report on Thursday. The four-week average of claims, which helps gauge the job market's health, slightly rose to 205,500. These claims, a proxy for layoffs, have been consistently low, ranging from 200,000 to 230,000 per week over the past year.

The U.S. job market has demonstrated resilience despite high gasoline prices resulting from Iran's conflict. The unemployment rate stands at a relatively low 4.1%, partly due to President Trump's immigration enforcement and the retirement of baby boomers, which reduced competition for jobs. Over a million individuals have exited the labor force in the last year.

Companies, still reeling from worker shortages following the end of COVID-19 lockdowns, are hesitant to lay off employees and are not aggressively hiring. Consequently, job seekers face challenging conditions, making it difficult for those entering the job market and those who lost their jobs to find new employment. Economists describe this scenario as a "no hire, no fire" job market.

So far this year, employers have added an average of 61,000 jobs per month, marking a significant improvement from the 9,700 average last year, the weakest hiring since 2002, when high interest rates and Trump's trade policies discouraged hiring. The Labor Department's upcoming August jobs report is anticipated to reveal that employers will have added approximately 65,000 jobs, as forecasted by the data firm FactSet.
