Tanzania's VP expelled from ruling party for indiscipline as his successor named

Emmanuel Nchimbi, the 54-year-old former Vice-President of Tanzania, has been expelled from the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party for his indiscipline. This decision was made following his resignation from his position after just 10 months in office. Nchimbi, who was Samia Suluhu Hassan's running mate in last year's disputed presidential election, has made several controversial remarks, urging Tanzanians to fight for a new constitution.

His resignation is set to take effect at the end of next week. Deogratius Ndejembi, 43, the Energy Minister, has been nominated as his replacement and his name will soon be presented to parliament for approval. The CCM's decision to expel Nchimbi was taken during an extraordinary meeting chaired by President Samia. The party has not disclosed the specific details of the indiscipline allegations against Nchimbi.

This marks the first time a vice-president has stepped down in Tanzania's history. Nchimbi shared his resignation letter on social media, stating that he has become convinced, without doubt, that the president wants changes. The election that brought Samia and Nchimbi to power in November was boycotted by the main opposition party, Chadema, which had demanded electoral reforms before participating.

The election resulted in violent protests, leading to the death of at least 500 people, according to an official inquiry. Opposition parties and human rights groups accused the security forces of engaging in a brutal crackdown on anti-government protesters. President Samia blames these events for tarnishing Tanzania's reputation for stability.
