Sunway Lagoon roller coaster malfunctioned before sudden stop, says S’gor DOSH

On August 22, a roller coaster at Sunway Lagoon experienced a mechanical failure before coming to an abrupt halt, resulting in injuries to ten individuals, according to Selangor's occupational safety and health department (DOSH). The incident involved 22 local and foreign visitors ranging in age from 11 to 44 years old. Preliminary findings indicate that the ride had been functioning correctly prior to the malfunction, which transpired approximately 200 meters from the disembarkation point.

This prompted the automatic emergency braking system, subsequently causing the coaster to halt abruptly and cause injuries to the affected passengers. Ten individuals were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of their injuries sustained from the sudden stop.

In response to the incident, Selangor DOSH has issued a prohibition order, enabling the Putraajaya DOSH's forensic engineering division to conduct a thorough technical inspection to determine the root cause of the malfunction. Additional investigations are being carried out, including interviews with the employer and witnesses to gather statements.

These inquiries are being carried out under Section 18(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994, which mandates occupiers of workplace premises to take all reasonable steps to safeguard the safety of non-employees utilizing the premises. Those found guilty of violating this provision may face a maximum fine of RM500,000.

Sunway Group founder Jeffrey Cheah stated that authorities are investigating the incident, which he attributed to potential metal fatigue. The police have ruled out foul play, which occurred around 9 pm and involved the aforementioned 22 individuals. No fatalities were reported in connection with the incident.
