The recent settlement between the United States and Meta regarding social media platform regulations for young users has been described as comprehensive but not perfect. The 48 US states that agreed to the deal with Meta have allocated $18 billion to protect teenagers in social networks. However, a harsher verdict could have seen Meta pay up to $1.4 trillion, equal to the company's market value on the stock exchange.

Similarly, a total ban on Facebook and Instagram for users under 16 years, similar to Australia's law, was also on the table for discussion.

Despite the potential benefits of a total ban, the evidence suggests that such a measure might not be effective. The US agreement, while not ideal, is still considered a step in the right direction. Studies from Australia indicate that a total ban primarily leads to alternative usage. Approximately 61% of children aged 12-15 still have access to one or more social media accounts.

The commission suggests that alternative platforms, particularly those not regulated, such as those in China, pose similar risks to children's health.
