South Korean police scandal over missing-person cases deepens public distrust

A South Korean police officer is accused of falsifying documents in two missing-person cases, leading to the discovery of two additional bodies on Jeju Island, South Korea's most popular resort destination. The first officer identified as Bu closed the missing-person reports on a 37-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man without verifying their safety, and later admitted to fabricating statements to their relatives.

The woman's body was found at a palm tree farm on Jeju Island on Monday, and the man's body was discovered on Saturday. Both individuals had been reported missing to police on Jeju Island. Bu was arrested on Monday and is currently under investigation for his actions in handling the two missing-person cases. South Korean authorities have expressed deep regret and vowed to conduct a thorough review of their police system, with the aim of preventing similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The scandal has sparked public distrust in the police force, particularly as the country prepares for a restructuring of its criminal justice system that will grant police greater authority while stripping prosecutors of their investigative powers. President Lee Jae Myung has instructed his prime minister to explore reforms to improve police oversight.
