Smith and Cox revive England against Pakistan after Abbas strikes

On day one of the second Test between England and Pakistan at Lord's, Jamie Smith and Jordan Cox both scored fifties as England fought back from a poor start. Veteran Pakistani paceman Mohammad Abbas took three wickets for just four runs in 16 balls, including the crucial wicket of England captain Joe Root for just four runs. The hosts were reduced to 36-3 after Pakistan won the toss in helpful conditions for seam bowling.

Smith's 61 and Cox's 55 helped England recover, shifting focus away from the late-night drinking incident that saw Brydon Carse dropped from the squad. Abbas bowled brilliantly, ending the day with 4-56, while Mohammad Ali claimed 3-67. Pakistan captain Babar Azam, the only change in the lineup, opted to field on the green-tinged pitch under grey skies following a rain delay.

Abbas, who had previously had stints with English counties, put on 67 runs for the first wicket with Ali, while Smith reached his fifty off just 63 balls and was eventually bowled by Ali. England's fielding was criticized after they conceded Pakistan wickets at regular intervals, but they managed to stage a recovery through Smith and Cox's strong batting performance.
