SK hynix Targets HBM Mass-Production in Indiana Fab by 2028

SK hynix's advanced packaging production base in West Lafayette, Indiana is making significant progress, with a groundbreaking ceremony set for August 27, 2026 to mark the start of full-scale construction. This $3.87 billion investment by the South Korean company is not just about building a new factory, but about establishing a strategic presence in the U.S. to meet government demands for semiconductor 'America First' policies and to strengthen the AI semiconductor triangular alliance with Nvidia and TSMC.

The project is backed by $458 million in subsidies and $570 million in loan support from the U.S. Department of Commerce under the CHIPS Act, along with tax benefits and infrastructure support from the Indiana state government and local municipality. West Lafayette, home to Purdue University, a leading institution in semiconductor engineering, was chosen as the project site due to its potential for joint research and development cooperation.

SK hynix aims to operate a mass production system for advanced AI memory products, including next-generation HBM, starting in the second half of 2028. This investment is part of a broader effort by the U.S. to shift semiconductor manufacturing from Asia to the mainland, in response to concerns over supply chain vulnerabilities during geoeconomic crises.

By reinforcing technological hegemony and stabilizing the supply chain, the U.S. aims to reduce reliance on East Asian countries for backend processing stages, including contract manufacturing and advanced packaging.
