Seoul expands Jamsil Tourist Zone into trendy alleyways

Just a stone's throw from the iconic Lotte World Tower, Seoul is quietly revamping its tourism appeal. In a bold move to merge modern attractions with authentic local culture, the Seoul Metropolitan Government unveiled Thursday that the Jamsil Special Tourist Zone will now extend to include Songridan-gil, a trendy alleyway famous for its artisan cafes.

This expansion, which brings the zone's area from 2.31 to 2.75 square kilometers, joins the existing culinary hotspots of Bangi Market and Bangi Food Alley. With this move, the total area now encompasses nearly 2.75 square kilometers of vibrant neighborhood corridors. By incorporating these bustling streets into Jamsil’s current tourism footprint—already a hotspot for nearly three million foreign visitors yearly to sites like Seokchon Lake, Olympic Park, and Lotte World—the city aims to transform Jamsil from a brief sightseeing stop into a fully immersive, 24-hour cultural destination.

This strategic shift aligns with global travel trends, particularly those of Gen Z and millennial travelers, who are increasingly opting for self-directed exploration over conventional tour buses.
