Selma Yudha joins race for 60th NUGS President with promise of student-focused leadership

Selma Yudha has officially declared her candidacy for the 60th Presidency of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), becoming the sole female candidate in the election. The decision to run for office stemmed from consultations and support from students and other stakeholders throughout the nation. Ms. Yudha is advocating for a leadership style that is both responsive and inclusive, with a focus on delivering concrete results for students rather than merely making campaign promises.

Her platform calls for NUGS to move beyond election-season commitments and tackle issues directly affecting students' welfare and future. Key challenges highlighted by Yudha include the escalating cost of education, job market uncertainties, and concerns over inadequate representation. She emphasizes that true student leadership must be attentive to the diverse needs of its constituents and ensure equitable decision-making.

Ms. Yudha's background in youth leadership and diplomacy adds to her candidacy. She has previously served as Vice Chair for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) at the African Youth Leadership Diplomatic Conference in Addis Ababa in 2025 and as Vice Chair for the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in the same city in 2026.

Additionally, she has been the Fundraising Chair of the Rotaract Club of Accra Dome, where she played a crucial role in youth empowerment programs. As the only woman vying for the NUGS presidency, Yudha views her campaign as a means to inspire young women to pursue leadership roles despite existing obstacles. If elected, she aims to prioritize student welfare, mental health, innovation, and advocacy.
