Saudi Arabia wins WOAH recognition as free of equine disease dourine

In Riyadh, the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) has officially certified Saudi Arabia as free from dourine, a deadly disease that impacts horses. This designation came after the country demonstrated full compliance with WOAH's globally recognized guidelines for disease-free status. According to WOAH, the confirmation was based on a thorough examination of a detailed report from the National Center for the Prevention and Control of Plant Pests and Animal Diseases (Weqaa Center).

This center had documented the country's robust disease monitoring, precise field inspections, and thorough preventive measures across Saudi Arabia.

This recognition underscores Saudi Arabia's ongoing success in safeguarding its equine industry and advancing its veterinary practices. The achievement is anticipated to bolster the nation's capacity to accommodate international horse competitions and bolster the burgeoning horse racing industry within the Kingdom. It's important to note that dourine is a serious, sexually transmitted illness in horses, donkeys, and other equines, caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma equiperdum. Earlier this year, Saudi Arabia was declared free from equine viral arteritis, following a series of similar declarations last year for diseases such as glanders, equine anemia, and African horse sickness.
