Ruto: Katiba anniversary must be a day of national accounting

President William Ruto has urged Kenyans to view the 16th anniversary of the 2010 Constitution as a day for national reflection and accountability. Speaking at the Katiba Day 2026 symposium, he argued that the anniversary should not merely be an annual event but an occasion for assessing how well Kenya has implemented the Constitution and whether its institutions are fulfilling their mandate.

"Katiba Day, 16 years later, must be more than an annual anniversary. It must be a day of national accounting," the President stated. Ruto challenged leaders, institutions, and citizens to collectively review key questions: whether Kenya has faithfully implemented the Constitution, whether those with public authority have acted responsibly, and if Kenyans have effectively enjoyed the rights and freedoms granted to them under the Constitution.

He also questioned whether the country's institutions have remained true to their intended purposes. This call for "national accounting" marks a shift from simply commemorating the Constitution to evaluating its real-world impact. The President's message follows ongoing debates among political leaders and constitutional experts about whether Kenya should focus on further constitutional amendments or strengthen the implementation of the existing framework.
