Russian army lieutenant colonel killed in car bombing in St. Petersburg

On August 27, a car bomb detonated in the Slavyanka neighborhood of St. Petersburg, resulting in the death of a Russian lieutenant colonel. His spouse, who was also inside the vehicle, sustained critical injuries and was transferred to an intensive care unit. The car that was destroyed was identified as a Chinese Geely crossover. Upon starting the engine, the bomb detonated, shattering the rear window, severing the hood and rear bumper, and considerably warping the overall structure of the automobile, while propelling debris up to several meters away from the explosion's epicenter.

Eyewitnesses, as reported by the Telegram channel Ostorozhno, Novosti!, also stated that adjacent parked vehicles were affected by the attack. No official information has been disclosed regarding the identity of the deceased or the exact sequence of events leading to the explosion. Prior to this incident, there had been numerous assassination attempts targeting Russian military personnel and security officials, prompting the Ministry of Internal Affairs to impose limitations on courier parking near several of its establishments.

These restrictions included a courier service associated with the Zolotoe Yabloko cosmetics store, which was prohibited from parking at 29 designated locations in Moscow and the Moscow Region. Notably, these zones were primarily situated around government institutions, police stations, specialized traffic police units, vehicle depots, and warehouses.

Additionally, there were three extra addresses listed, namely the central office of the Investigative Committee, a business center in Khimki associated with the GRU military unit 74455 in a U.S. Justice Department indictment, and a Defense Ministry residential complex for service members. The rationale for these restrictions was not explicitly stated in the communication, but they were implemented in response to a series of assassination attempts aimed at Russian military personnel and security officials.

These attacks involved the concealment of explosive devices within objects commonly associated with courier services, such as boxes, kick scooters, and electric scooters.
