Residents demand government actions as another 3-storey building collapses in Aba

A three-story building in Aba collapsed on Wednesday, causing alarm among nearby residents. The structure, still under construction, collapsed in the morning before construction workers arrived for the day. The building, meant for commercial use, fell apart during the roofing phase. While locals blamed substandard materials and subpar project management for the incident, no official statement from relevant agencies in Abia State has been issued to confirm these allegations.

Panic gripped the area following the collapse. Concerned residents gathered at the site, demanding urgent action from the Abia State government to address the recurring issue of collapsing buildings. Meanwhile, officials from the Greater Aba Development Authority sealed the fallen structure to facilitate a thorough investigation.

Earlier this year, there have been at least ten reported incidents of building collapses in various parts of Abia State, including Aba, Umuahia, Osisioma, and Ikwuano. Some of these incidents occurred in July 2026, such as the collapse of a two-story building on Finbars Road in Umuahia and a three-story building in Umuozue, Osisioma Ngwa LGA. Despite the incidents, no fatalities have been reported so far.
