Rams’ preseason finale only matters for six names

Thursday night’s preseason finale between the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers is more about showcasing who stays on the team than serving as a comprehensive audition. The primary focus is on the six individuals the Rams are most likely to secure for the regular season roster. The remaining players are seeking to make a positive impression in hopes of maintaining their positions on another team.

The uncertainty surrounding the team’s 53-man roster is evident in the backup quarterback position, where Stetson Bennett's grip on the job is weakening due to Ty Simpson’s impressive performance. Bennett’s box score might be impressive, but this game will be judged based on the quarterback's precision in throwing to tight windows.

Additionally, Simpson will need to consistently demonstrate his ability to throw beyond 20 yards in order to replace Bennett as Stafford’s understudy. As for the running backs, Kyren Williams, Blake Corum, and Ronnie Rivers are expected to make the team. However, the team may opt to carry only two of the three established running backs and place the third on the practice squad.

Similarly, the offensive line depth is uncertain, with Alaric Jackson potentially facing a suspension and Keagen Trost likely to miss the start of the regular season due to injury. If the offensive line depth becomes a concern, the Rams may turn to rookies like Keagen Trost and rookie UDFA Bill Murray, who has shown promise playing both tackle spots in the preseason.

Wesley Bailey, despite his impressive performance against the Saints, faces an uphill battle to make the 53-man roster. The Rams' roster is talented and highly competitive, and while preseason standouts may seem promising, they often do not have the best chance of making the final cut.
