Qatar and Iran discuss temporary shipping corridor, mine clearance in Strait of Hormuz

Qatar and Iran have proposed a temporary shipping corridor and mine-clearing initiative in the Strait of Hormuz to address ongoing regional tensions. During a meeting in Tehran, Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani discussed the plan with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi. The proposal aims to establish a joint temporary shipping route and a mine clearance project through the strait.

In addition to the maritime measures, the ministers also discussed regional developments and diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation and creating conditions conducive to dialogue. Both sides emphasized the importance of respecting neighboring countries' sovereignty and ensuring freedom of navigation. The initiative is part of broader diplomatic efforts involving Pakistan, Qatar, and Oman to ease tensions between Tehran and Washington.

Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi had previously visited Tehran to discuss the Strait of Hormuz issue. However, a senior Iranian source clarified that a final agreement with Oman on sharing the waterway and its revenues is still under negotiation. The collapse of a memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States in June, due to disagreements over the Strait of Hormuz, led to the resumption of U.S. strikes on Iranian territory in July.

These strikes were followed by increased economic pressure on Tehran through further sanctions aimed at isolating Iran from its trading partners.
