Police Use Surveillance Cameras to Narc On Guy Who Found $30 on the Ground

The Albany Police Department in Georgia recently turned to surveillance cameras to apprehend a man who had the audacity to pick up $30 they found on the floor of a Walmart. The department's call for help on Facebook, accompanied by a blurry image of the suspect, a presumably elderly gentleman, netted thousands of mocking comments from the public.

Members questioned the department's priorities, drawing attention to the age-old adage of "finders keepers." The incident also sparked broader discussions around the increasing use of surveillance technology and its potential for abuse. The Flock surveillance company, which claims its cameras can aid in crime-solving and locating missing persons, has come under fire for its extensive monitoring of residential areas and swimming pools, as well as its use by ICE in the deportation of immigrants.

Additionally, police officers have been accused of using the cameras to stalk women. While some studies suggest that the proliferation of cameras like Flock has had no impact on crime clearance rates in cities like Atlanta, critics argue that the true purpose of these surveillance systems is to enable the police to wield more power by punishing minor offenses.

The Albany police department later confirmed that the man did indeed return the money to the rightful owner, and no charges were filed.
