Police investigating possible forgery at AFRINIC election

Mauritius police are investigating possible forgery in connection with an annulled AFRINIC board election in June 2025. The African Network Information Centre (AFRINIC) is the regional internet registry for 54 African countries and the Indian Ocean region. AFRINIC has faced governance and operational issues in recent years, including a complex legal dispute with one of its members, Cloud Innovation, over AFRINIC's powers to terminate users who do not adhere to its rules for using IP addresses.

The disputes led to AFRINIC being unable to convene a board for several years, until the court placed the registry in receivership. AFRINIC organized an election in June 2025, but the Nomination Committee called it off during the in-person voting session due to concerns about the process. South Africa's Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) reported two alleged irregularities: a representative of a resource holder being informed that another person had already submitted a vote on their behalf through a Power of Attorney, and a representative discovering that a Power of Attorney had been mysteriously removed from AFRINIC's records before they could request a copy.

Mauritius Police confirmed to The Register that they are investigating the matter as a possible forgery case.
