PM Lawrence Wong extends condolences to those affected by Nepal-Tibet flash floods

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong expressed his deepest condolences on Thursday (Aug 27) to those affected by deadly flash floods along Nepal's border with China's Tibet. Over 1,300 individuals, including numerous foreign tourists, are currently missing following the catastrophic floods and landslides that struck the region on Wednesday, claiming at least 165 lives.

In a Facebook post, Mr. Wong said, "My deepest condolences to the families who have lost loved ones, and to all those affected by this tragedy." The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) is working closely with Nepali and Chinese authorities to provide consular assistance to Singaporeans impacted by the crisis. The MFA is also in contact with the families of those affected.

Mr. Wong added, "Our thoughts are with the people of Nepal and China during this difficult time, and with the authorities and emergency personnel working tirelessly on rescue and recovery efforts. We hope for the safe return of those still missing." Singaporeans in Nepal have been advised to exercise extreme caution, stay away from flood-affected regions, and avoid rivers, riverbanks, bridges, and low-lying areas.

The MFA recommended that travelers register with the ministry, purchase comprehensive travel insurance, and maintain contact with family, hotels, trekking agencies, and guides. The ministry warned of potential disruptions to roads, transport, communications, and essential services in the affected areas.
