PIMS fire: Minister orders safety audit of maritime institutions

Expressing sorrow over the recent fire at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Minister of Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry directed an urgent fire safety audit of all institutions under his Ministry on Thursday. A statement released by the minister stated that every institution must submit the audit report for each building within 15 days.

"Fire safety audits will be conducted on offices, hospitals, residential buildings, and warehouses," Chaudhry emphasized, "with special priority given to the Karachi Port Trust Hospital fire safety audit."

The fire incident at PIMS resulted in the tragic loss of at least 14 infants, according to rescue sources. The fire reportedly started when an air-conditioner compressor exploded inside the nursery. In response to this catastrophe, an official letter was sent to the heads of various organizations under the Ministry, instructing them to promptly carry out a thorough fire safety audit of all buildings and premises under their control. This audit would encompass several crucial aspects:

1. The condition and functionality of fire extinguishers, alarms, smoke detectors, hydrants, sprinklers, and other fire-fighting equipment.

2. The state of electrical wiring, distribution systems, generators, and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) that might pose a fire hazard.

3. The accessibility and visibility of emergency exits, escape routes, staircases, and fire exits, ensuring they remain clearly marked and unobstructed.

4. The sufficiency of emergency lighting, signage, and evacuation plans, including designated assembly points and the responsibilities of staff involved.

Chaudhry's directive aims to enhance fire safety measures across all institutions under the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, particularly prioritizing the safety of the Karachi Port Trust Hospital.
