Paul Afoko is best placed to unite a divided NPP – Broadcast Journalist, Abdul Moomen

Lecturer and broadcast journalist Abdul Hayi Moomen has suggested that former NPP National Chairman Paul Afoko is the most suitable candidate to unite the party and mend its internal rifts. In an article ahead of the NPP’s national executive elections, Moomen emphasized that delegates should focus on a candidate's ability to bring the party together rather than their resume.

He believes Afoko's experience within the party, notably his removal during a turbulent period, provides him with a unique insight into the divisions plaguing the NPP. Moomen argues that Afoko's return could offer the party an opportunity to demonstrate its ability to heal old wounds and reconcile factions as it strives to rebuild its fortunes.

He noted that Afoko's behavior following his removal sets him apart from other contenders, as he stayed committed to the party internally rather than attacking it externally. Moomen described this as a sign of maturity and maturity over weakness. He further pointed out that Afoko's understanding of the consequences of factionalism, given his experience at the highest levels of the party and his rejection from it, makes him a suitable candidate to lead a meaningful reconciliation process.

Moomen dismissed an argument by some delegates that the NPP’s National Chairman should not be from northern Ghana, emphasizing that northern Ghana is made up of different ethnic groups and should not be treated as one political bloc. He also pointed out that the NPP has historically elected southern presidential candidates and National Chairmen without viewing it as a structural issue.

According to Moomen, the focus for delegates should be on the candidate's potential to unite the party rather than their geographical origin. His endorsement of Afoko comes as the NPP’s National Chairmanship contest heats up, with several candidates vying to lead the party through a period of introspection and rebuilding.
