Over 400 structures destroyed, hundreds rendered homeless after fire destroys properties in Asawase Apagyahene area

A massive fire ravaged a slum area in the Asawase Apagyahene neighborhood of the Asokore Mampong Municipality in the Ashanti Region on August 27, 2026, leaving hundreds of residents without homes. The blaze erupted around 5:30 am in a makeshift structure, swiftly engulfing over 400 wooden buildings, claiming personal belongings, savings, and shelter for numerous families.

Firefighters responded promptly to the scene, effectively containing the inferno and preventing it from spreading to neighboring communities. While the origin of the fire is under investigation, local residents suspect an electrical fault as the cause.

Displaced victims were seen in distress, with infants in tow, desperately trying to salvage any remaining possessions from the ashes. Many reported losing substantial amounts of Ghanian currency, with individual losses ranging from GHS 3,000 to GHS 6,000. A lactating mother, interviewed by our reporter, expressed the traumatic reality of the situation: "We have lost everything to the fire, including our money. We have children, but we don’t know where we are going to sleep tonight."

The victims are urgently appealing to the government and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) for immediate relief assistance, emergency shelter, and financial support to help them rebuild their lives in the wake of this devastating disaster.
