Osun election tested state’s democratic values – Gov Adeleke

Osun State's recent governorship election marked a significant test of the region's democratic values, a 35th anniversary event for the creation of the state. Governor Ademola Adeleke addressed the nation in a broadcast, praising the residents for their conduct during the election and highlighting their commitment to democracy. He commended the people of Osun as "people of valour and integrity," and noted that they had emerged as a shining example of democratic practice nationally.

Despite a reign of terror, the governor reported that residents bravely exercised their voting rights, rejecting violence and embracing the ballot. Some voters even defended their votes at the risk of their lives, demonstrating a deep-rooted belief in the electoral process. The governor acknowledged the losses and injuries sustained during the election period, expressing sympathy for the families who lost loved ones. He assured that their sacrifices would not be in vain.

Governor Adeleke praised the residents for demonstrating their faith in democracy and the rule of law. He pledged to heal the wounds inflicted and unite the people, while upholding equity and fairness during the remainder of his administration. To address the aftermath of the violence, he announced the establishment of an election victim compensation fund, headed by the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly.

The governor also pledged to continue his administration's programmes in infrastructure, digital economy, sports, agriculture, education, and healthcare, while focusing on youths, women, and students.

He urged residents to remain law-abiding citizens and avoid reprisal attacks, vowing to strengthen his administration's five-point agenda, which emphasizes wealth creation, poverty reduction, rural development, industrialization, and ease of doing business. As the 35th anniversary of Osun State's creation approached, Governor Adeleke expressed pride in the achievements of the state, despite the challenges faced, and sought continued cooperation from residents to deliver good governance.
