Operation Bluebird Launches New Twitter

Operation Bluebird, a Virginia-based startup aiming to revive the dormant Twitter brand, announced the launch of its new social media platform on Monday. Stephen Coates, a cofounder of Operation Bluebird, stated that the company has secured investors and a product but had been waiting for months to launch. The nascent Twitter.now currently boasts only a few hundred users and retains familiar features such as replies and retweets.

A key differentiator is an automated fact-checking tool, called Vera, which employs a Gemini-based veracity engine to perform real-time analysis on every tweet. Coates has been testing Vera by posting intentionally false messages, such as "George Washington was our second president." The primary objective of Operation Bluebird is to create a safer, more trustworthy online space, emphasizing freedom of speech without promoting harmful or inaccurate viral content.

The startup argues that Elon Musk's renaming of the company to X effectively abandoned the Twitter trademarks, allowing Operation Bluebird to claim them. However, X Corp. has sued to prevent the effort, though a federal judge tentatively ruled in April that X may have relinquished rights to the term "tweet," the bird logo, and possibly the Twitter name itself, though no formal ruling has been issued.

Operation Bluebird has capitalized on this perceived opportunity, emphasizing that its new Twitter is not affiliated with X. The startup's website clearly states, "Operation Bluebird, Inc. picked up the name X Corp. walked away from and is rebuilding it on trust, in your browser at twitter.now, we are not X, and we are not affiliated with X Corp."
