North Korea threatens ‘powerful response’ to US arms sale to South Korea

North Korea has expressed strong disapproval of planned US military and human rights initiatives involving South Korea, warning that these moves could exacerbate regional instability and prompt a potent response from Pyongyang. The criticism followed a US decision to potentially sell AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II missiles and associated equipment to South Korea, valued at approximately $125 million.

A spokesperson for North Korea’s Foreign Ministry, speaking through the state-run Korean Central News Agency, highlighted concerns over the possible impact on regional security. "We cannot overlook the adverse effect of the US sale of its weapons to the ROK on the regional security environment," the spokesperson stated, referring to the Republic of Korea by its official abbreviation.

Pyongyang also denounced Washington's plans to fund programs aimed at assessing human rights conditions in North Korea and to enhance information dissemination into the country. The US Department of State announced an open funding competition for organizations to document alleged rights violations and challenge what it termed the country's "information monopoly."

The Foreign Ministry accused the United States of a pattern of hostile actions, arguing that the recent measures posed security risks and sought to undermine internal stability. The ministry emphasized that the persistence and sequence of US hostile moves constituted an escalating threat, vowing an immediate and powerful response to such acts.

This criticism arrives despite recent efforts by US President Donald Trump to reestablish dialogue with North Korea, including reducing joint military exercises with South Korea. However, North Korean authorities have responded cautiously to these initiatives. Relations between the two Koreas remain tense, with the peninsula technically still in a state of war, as the 1950-53 Korean War concluded with an armistice agreement rather than a peace treaty.
