Nigeria Football Federation members resign, statement says

On Thursday, the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) underwent significant changes, with its President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and several executive committee members announcing their resignations. This development was reported on the federation's website following a press conference in Abuja, where Gusau confirmed his decision.

The resignations coincide with criticism directed at the NFF, particularly in light of the Nigerian national football teams' underwhelming performances. The Super Eagles men's team failed to secure a spot in the 2026 men's World Cup, while the Super Falcons women's team lost a playoff match against South Africa, thus failing to qualify for the 2027 Women's World Cup. This marks a stark contrast to the team's consistent presence in every Women's World Cup since the competition's inception in 1991.

Gusau informed board members of his decision to resign and encouraged others intending to do the same to follow suit. The leadership upheaval is particularly notable as it occurs a month before the NFF's scheduled elective congress on September 27 in Lafia. This timing raises questions about the federation's subsequent leadership transition and the upcoming election process.
