Nigeria Football Federation members resign, statement says

On Thursday, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced the resignations of President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and members of its executive committee. The statement was published on the federation's website, and Gusau confirmed his decision at a press conference in Abuja.

The resignations were prompted by criticism of the NFF following the Super Eagles' failure to qualify for the 2026 men's World Cup. Additionally, Nigeria's women's team, the Super Falcons, missed out on the 2027 Women's World Cup after losing to South Africa in a playoff earlier in the month. This marked the first time since the Women's World Cup began in 1991 that the Super Falcons did not qualify for the tournament.

Gusau informed the board members of his decision and encouraged those willing to resign to do so. The leadership change occurs a month before the NFF's elective congress, set to take place on September 27 in Lafia. This timing raises questions about the federation's plans for leadership transition and the upcoming election.
