Nepal flash flood: more than 1,500 missing, mostly tourists, after disaster kills at least 165 at Tibet border

More than 1,300 people have been reported missing and at least 165 confirmed dead after flash floods and landslides near the Nepal-Tibet border. Among those unaccounted for are 823 people, including 579 Nepali and foreign tourists. The exact nationalities of the missing foreigners are not listed by the disaster agency.

China reported 558 people missing, with nearly half of them being foreigners. Nepal's tourism board has listed 142 nationals from neighboring India as missing, who were staying with three travel agencies: Samrat Tours & Travels, Leaf Holiday, and Himalayan Glacier.

The United Nations estimates 53 Ukrainian nationals are missing, including a group of 46 tourists who have been out of contact. Thirty-four Australians are also missing, with 15 of them part of a pilgrim group that includes two teenagers. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed concern for those worried about their loved ones.

Malaysia reported more than 50 of its citizens unable to be reached, while the UK has 12 citizens missing with the Alpine Eco Trek agency. Two Britons are also among those unaccounted for in Rasuwagadhi area. South Korea has nine hydropower workers missing in Rasuwa district, and Japan has five nationals potentially missing.

South Africa has four travelers missing with the same Alpine Eco Trek agency, while the United States has three citizens unaccounted for with Fishtail Tours & Travels. Italy confirmed two nationals and their guide are stranded upstream from a landslide and receiving assistance.

New Zealand has five citizens unaccounted for, Canada has ten, and Singapore has two, according to Himalayan Glacier managing director Sanket Pandey. The disaster remains a serious concern for many countries with citizens in Nepal.
