Nepal-China floods: Death toll rises to 469, over 1,400 missing as global rescue efforts intensify

At least 469 people have died and over 1,400 remain missing after devastating floods struck the Nepal-Tibet border region, according to Nepali police. The death toll has since risen to 389, with the majority of the victims unaccounted for being foreign tourists, including numerous Americans. About 90 U.S. citizens are still unaccounted for, with a Virginia woman, a Texas couple, and a mother and her 14-year-old daughter among them.

Many of the missing were on a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash in Tibet, a site sacred to Hindus, Buddhists, and others. Rescue efforts have been hampered by challenging terrain, destroyed infrastructure, and worsening weather conditions. Chinese authorities have warned that a fresh wave of flooding could occur as a result of heavy rain and concerns over a dam formed by the landslide.
