NAGRAT vows to expose teachers, non-teaching staff sexually abusing students

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has vowed to confront and expose teachers and non-teaching staff who engage in sexual abuse of students. NAGRAT President Jacob Anabah emphasized that the Association will no longer tolerate such misconduct and will take decisive action against those found guilty. Anabah highlighted that sexual abuse can occur not only in schools but also within families, suggesting that perpetrators may have underlying behavioral issues.

He stressed that teachers, as role models, must uphold professional boundaries and refrain from any form of sexual relationship with students. Anabah referred to the Ghana Education Service Council Code of Conduct, which prohibits employees from engaging in conduct that could be interpreted as sexual harassment of pupils or students.

He called upon traditional and religious leaders, as well as influential members of society, to speak out against child sexual abuse and ensure that these cases are handled appropriately. The society must take a stand against such crimes and those in positions of authority must lead by example, Anabah urged. NAGRAT has set up a committee to develop strategies for dealing with teachers who engage in sexual misconduct and is prepared to name and shame offenders.

Anabah specifically criticized male teachers for exploiting their close relationships with students under the guise of providing care and support, urging them not to abuse their positions. The Ghana Education Service (GES) must strengthen its supervision in schools to ensure a safe environment for students and staff, Anabah concluded.
