Ministers have no business meddling in chieftaincy disputes – Ayariga

Mahama Ayariga, the Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, has stated that ministers of state have no authority to meddle in specific chieftaincy matters. According to Mr Ayariga, chieftaincy is a sensitive area governed by constitutional and legal provisions that clearly define the responsibilities of both government and traditional institutions.

He emphasized that ministers serving the president should support the chieftaincy institution instead of getting involved in disputes involving traditional authorities.

During his appearance before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, August 27, Mr Ayariga told lawmakers, "It is not the business of a minister to meddle in chieftaincy matters." He outlined the roles of the National House of Chiefs, Regional Houses of Chiefs, and Traditional Councils in addressing chieftaincy issues, while also noting that matters reaching the Supreme Court fall under the jurisdiction of the highest court in the land.

Mr Ayariga reiterated, "As minister you have no job in meddling in chieftaincy matters, and that is how I will approach the work."
