Mining, Environment category leads Western Region GJA awards entries

Fifteen aspiring hairdressers and beauticians in Ghana's Western Region were recently examined by the Ghana Hairdressers and Beauticians Association (GHABA) in an effort to raise professional standards in the industry. The candidates, from the Sekondi Zone, were tested in various aspects, including chemicals, practical skills, and theory, at the Pro-Cathedral Catholic Church in Sekondi.

They included both graduates of Senior High School and Junior High School, as well as individuals without formal education who completed a three-year apprenticeship between 2023 and 2026.

GHABA Chairperson, Ms Sarah Amoah, explained that the examination aimed not only to test the candidates' technical abilities but also to prepare them to meet professional standards in a rapidly evolving industry. The assessment covered topics such as hair setting, chemicals, and other critical aspects of the profession, with a focus on safety, customer care, marketing, public relations, job performance, and financial management.

Ms Amoah emphasized that obtaining professional certification would open up new opportunities for the successful candidates, such as employment in hotels and corporate establishments, opportunities abroad, and access to financial support. The association has trained over 2,000 learners in its 50-year history, many of whom contribute to the growth of the beauty industry and the economy.

GHABA is committed to expanding opportunities for its members by ensuring they are competent professionals capable of competing in established salons, hotels, and other institutions.

The Central Regional President of GHABA, Ms Mary Adjoa Appiah, highlighted the importance of professional training and expressed hope that the candidates would use their newly acquired knowledge to become skilled practitioners and ambassadors of the association. The examination conducted by Ms Appiah and other examiners underscored the need for practitioners to demonstrate professionalism, adhere to safety protocols, and maintain good customer relations to protect their reputation and the future of the profession.
