Meta settlement opens new front in global fight over social media harm

The massive Meta settlement with multiple US states could signal a wave of similar legal actions, impacting social media giants such as TikTok, YouTube, and Snap, the so-called "Core Industry Members." Meta's Chief Legal Officer, C.J. Mahoney, emphasized that this framework only works if all their peers join in, stating it's the right path forward for the entire industry.

California and New York initiated the coalition of states accusing Meta of designing Instagram and Facebook to hook minors, harvest their data, and deceive the public.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta disclosed that they have been in talks with other industry companies regarding similar settlements. The implementation of the settlement remains unclear, but it is expected to be enacted in the coming months. If Meta breaches the terms, Bonta affirmed they would seek contempt of court. Bonta clarified that while the $17 billion fine is substantial for a company with a market value near $1.5 trillion and annual revenue of approximately $200 billion, the real concern lies in the precedent set by this settlement.

Many experts agree that Meta's primary challenge lies in potential future lawsuits and required product changes.

Investors' reaction to the settlement also appears muted, with Meta's shares seeing a slight increase. However, the bigger risk for Meta and other social media companies is the possibility of more legal battles and changes to their platforms.
