Media: CIA chief's Moscow visit to warn Russia against attacks on Baltics, war in Iran

U.S. Central Intelligence Agency Director John Ratcliffe embarked on an unexpected trip to Moscow this week, with the purpose of cautioning Russia against potential attacks on NATO countries, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. This is Ratcliffe's first visit to the Russian capital, marking a significant departure from previous visits by other American officials.

The intelligence reports suggest that Russia may be contemplating a limited attack on a NATO member state, possibly targeting the Baltic states. The Kremlin denied Ratcliffe met with President Vladimir Putin, stating that they only discussed with Russian intelligence officials. The U.S. White House did not clarify the exact purpose of Ratcliffe's journey, which comes after several visits from U.S. peace envoy Steve Witkoff.

This marks the first time a CIA director has visited Moscow since November 2021, when William Burns traveled to the capital to dissuade Putin from invading Ukraine. On August 25, reports surfaced indicating that Ratcliffe had made an unannounced visit to Moscow, and on the same day, it was reported that the U.S. had asked Ukraine to desist from attacking Moscow, St. Petersburg, and northern Russia during the delegation's stay.

Ratcliffe's trip served as a warning to Putin, following intelligence reports that Russia was preparing for mobilization and a potential test of NATO's resolve. President Donald Trump acknowledged Ratcliffe's unannounced trip to Moscow, describing it as "semi-routine," dismissing rumors of potential Russian attacks against the United Kingdom, stating that the mission dealt with "none of the above."

After his return to Washington, Ratcliffe met with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Kane.
