Manacor imposes water restrictions as drought alert sparks urgent measures

Manacor has implemented emergency water restrictions following an official drought alert, urging residents and businesses to cut back on water usage as supplies face increasing strain. The town hall approved a set of measures to safeguard drinking water reserves and guarantee sufficient water for essential needs during the summer's final weeks.

The restrictions stem from a significant drop in water reserves across the Balearic Islands, particularly in the Manacor-Felanitx water management area, which now falls under drought alert. Prohibited or heavily restricted non-essential activities include filling private swimming pools, watering gardens, washing vehicles, and other water-intensive tasks.

The town hall emphasizes that these measures are precautionary, aiming to prevent more severe restrictions if dry conditions persist. Residents are advised to inspect for leaks, minimize unnecessary water use, and conserve supplies as much as possible. This action is part of a broader trend on Mallorca, where persistent heat and drought have put pressure on water resources.

While water remains accessible in many areas, local authorities warn that municipalities facing more severe shortages may adopt their own conservation efforts. Across the Balearic Islands, water reserves reached a low of approximately 39% in July, with the Manacor-Felanitx region contributing to the decline. Manacor joins other municipalities in taking steps to protect local water supplies.

Officials have announced that the restrictions will remain in place until conditions improve and appeal to everyone to help secure supplies for residents, businesses, and visitors amid the prospect of another hot, dry summer on the island.
